Everton are reportedly interested in Newcastle United playmaker Miguel Almiron amid rumours that Chelsea are set to sign Antony Gordon this summer.
Everton are showing interest in bringing Miguel Almiron to Goodison Park before next Thursday’s deadline. That is according to The Guardian’s Ed Aarons, who claims that Newcastle United will only sanction a permanent exit for the 28-year-old Paraguayan international.
Everton are still winless in the Premier League, and it seems Frank Lampard’s side faces the prospect of another frustrating season at Goodison Park. And it is not just troubles on the pitch that have blighted their season thus far.
Richarlison’s sale to Tottenham and the continued injury absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin have already come back to bite Everton, with the Toffees struggling for both creativity and precision in the final third in their opening three league games. And rumours regarding Anthony Gordon’s future are also unraveling in the background.
It has been recently reported that Gordon wants to join Chelsea, who are mounting a fresh bid worth up to £60 million to complete a deal for the Everton academy product. As a result, the Toffees are lining up a few moves to address the areas of need with the incoming cash. They are now eyeing a deal for the Newcastle United playmaker Miguel Almiron to potentially replace Gordon.
Almiron joined Newcastle from MLS side Atlanta United back in 2019, arriving in a £20 million deal, which was a club-record fee at the time. A firm fan favourite at St. James’ Park for his relentless work rate, it is safe to say that the Paraguayan playmaker did not enjoy a great 2021/22 campaign by any stretch of the imagination.
The South American attacker made 32 appearances but only managed to score one goal during the course of the season. Much of his good work at Newcastle has been overshadowed by a lack of end product, with 126 competitive appearances yielding only 15 goals and five assists.
However, Almiron seems to have found his way back under Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and has had a solid start to the season. He turned in a standout display against Premier League champions Manchester City last weekend in a thrilling 3-3 draw at St. James’ Park, scoring Newcastle’s opener.
Almiron is contracted at St. James’ Park until 2024, and it is noted Newcastle could welcome interest in the 28-year-old. But they are only willing to sanction a permanent deal this summer and not interested in a loan agreement, with the Magpies more likely to reinvest the proceeds of a sale if Almiron does go, having been linked with Leeds United’s Jack Harrison earlier this summer.
Also, Newcastle are expected to sign some players before the deadline, but the club might also need to part ways with a few of their current ones to make room in the squad. And selling Almiron to Everton would also help them comply with Financial Fair Play.
That said, Howe rates Almiron very highly and considers him the dynamo of his side’s front-foot pressing system. So it will be interesting to see if Newcastle are willing to sell their star playmaker to Everton just days before the transfer deadline.
