Manchester United have reportedly been offered an opportunity to sign Alvaro Morata from Atletico Madrid in the ongoing transfer window.
According to ESPN, Manchester United have been given a chance to secure the signing of Spanish striker Alvaro Morata from Atletico Madrid as they continue their search for a new No. 9 this summer.
Manchester United have had a torrid summer so far, having had problems closing deals for their intended targets. The pursuit of Frenkie de Jong has been going on for months with no success, while they have also let Cristiano Ronaldo’s situation at the club grow out of hand, with the Portuguese superstar’s future still unclear and no replacement in sight.
After losing Anthony Martial to an injury, Manchester United were forced to field Christian Eriksen as the centre-forward in their Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion, which they lost. It has finally sparked the club into action as they look to bring in a new striker at the earliest.
However, Manchester United have had to face setbacks on that front, too, as top target Benjamin Sesko has signed for RB Leipzig. Meanwhile, the Red Devils had to call off their ill-advised pursuit of 33-year-old Marko Arnautovic due to fan complaints. Given their current predicament, they are in desperate need of a new No. 9 and have now been offered former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata.
Morata is back at Atletico Madrid after spending the last couple of seasons away on loan at Juventus. The Bianconeri had an opportunity to sign him permanently but decided against it, although they have since rekindled their interest in the 29-year-old, with Los Rojiblancos happy to part ways with the Spanish international.
Morata had also been on the radars of Arsenal, but nothing came of it as the Gunners ended up signing Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City instead. The 29-year-old former Real Madrid star had a stint in England with Chelsea, having joined the Blues in the summer of 2017.
However, in 18 months at Stamford Bridge, Morata only managed a tally of 24 goals and six assists from 72 matches before joining Atletico in January 2019. Having produced similarly underwhelming numbers at the Wanda Metropolitano, the 29-year-old joined Juventus in 2020 and enjoyed a productive season on his return. But Morata was once again sub-par last time out, finishing with just 12 goals in 48 games.
The Spanish international has hardly proven himself to be a reliable goalscorer and might not suit Erik ten Hag’s system at Manchester United. So, the Red Devils might be better off not taking up the chance to sign Morata. However, with time running out fast, they will need to bring in attacking reinforcements at the earliest possible.
