Manchester United defender Alex Telles has departed the club, joining La Liga giants Sevilla on a season-long loan deal.
As confirmed by the club’s official website, Manchester United defender Alex Telles has signed for La Liga side Sevilla on a temporary loan deal for the upcoming season.
Telles joined Manchester United from FC Porto in the summer of 2020 and has made 50 appearances for the club in his two years at Old Trafford. The 29-year-old enjoyed a solid first season in England as he battled with Luke Shaw for the left-back slot, leading to improvement in the Englishman’s performances as well.
However, Telles’ performances in the last season were disappointing, to say the least, with the Brazilian struggling to make an impact at either end of the pitch. With new manager Erik ten Hag opting to sign a new left-back earlier this summer in the form of Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord, Telles’ position in the squad had come under threat.
A move back to FC Porto was speculated but the Portuguese giants had no interest in re-signing Telles. Sevilla then presented themselves as an interested party in pursuit of the Brazilian international and have now clinched the signing of the 29-year-old from Manchester United on a season-long loan deal.

Sevilla needed to sign a new left-back after they allowed Ludwig Augustinsson to join Aston Villa earlier this summer. Los Nervionenses were linked with a move for Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon. The Spaniard himself was believed to be keen on a return to the Andalusian club where he had spent the 2019/20 season out on loan.
However, Sevilla have instead settled for Telles, who proved to be a more economical signing for the La Liga giants. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Julen Lopetegui’s side will be paying just €2 million as part of his salary.
Telles becomes the third member of the Manchester United squad to depart on loan this summer, following in the footsteps of Dean Henderson, who has joined Nottingham Forest for the upcoming campaign, and Alvaro Fernandez, who left for EFL Championship side Preston North End, where he will spend the 2022/23 campaign.
