Manchester United are reportedly considering a summer move for 21-year-old Brighton & Hove Albion right-back Tariq Lamptey.
According to Fichajes, Manchester United have drawn out a three-man shortlist for the right-back position as new manager Erik ten Hag is keen to add reinforcements in that area. Brighton & Hove Albion’s Tariq Lamptey is one of the three options that the club are considering for a summer move.
The Red Devils currently have Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as their two recognised right-backs, but neither of the two has shown enough promise to be entrusted with a regular starting role for Manchester United.
While Wan-Bissaka has been often found wanting in the offensive department, there are question marks over Dalot’s defensive abilities. Thus, Manchester United are eager to add a top-class right-back to their squad this summer, with Wan-Bissaka also on the transfer list.
According to the source, the three players Manchester United are considering a move for this summer are Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries, Barcelona’s Sergino Dest and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Tariq Lamptey. Dumfries is said to be the club’s primary target, with ten Hag eager to get the Dutchman on board this summer.
However, Dumfries joined Inter just last summer, and it would take at least €50 million to convince the Nerazzurri to sell him. Sergino Dest is next on Manchester United’s priority list and is expected to cost in the region of €25 million.
Lamptey is their last resort, with the Red Devils aware that the Englishman would cost a lot more than the two other two options. The 21-year-old is one of the highly-rated full-backs in the Premier League and still has three years left on his contract with the Seagulls, whom he joined in the 2020 January transfer window from Chelsea.
Lamptey has played 51 matches for the Premier League club since, also scoring a goal and providing six assists across all competitions. But Manchester United would only make a move for him if they fail in their attempt to sign either Dumfries or Dest in the ongoing transfer window.
Manchester United have already completed three signings this summer. Left-back Tyrell Malacia has arrived from Feyenoord, Christian Eriksen has been signed on a free transfer, while centre-back Lisandro Martinez has joined them from Ajax. It will be interesting to see if Lamptey becomes the fourth summer signing for Manchester United.
