Manchester United snubbed chance to sign Paulo Dybala

AS Roma-bound playmaker Paulo Dybala was reportedly offered to Manchester United earlier in the summer, but the Red Devils snubbed him.

Writing in his column for Caught Offside, Fabrizio Romano has offered a crucial bit of information regarding Paulo Dybala. The Argentine international has recently made headlines by joining Serie A giants AS Roma this week, but the player was apparently offered to Manchester United earlier in the summer.

However, the Premier League giants were not interested in signing the 28-year-old forward and thus declined the opportunity. He was not the kind of player new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was looking for, whereas the former Juventus attacker did not attract any offers from other Premier League clubs.

Dybala ultimately ended up joining Serie A giants AS Roma on a free transfer. The Argentine international is coming on the back of a mixed spell at Juventus that was marred by inconsistency and lack of identity in the past couple of years.

Although his tally of 115 goals and 48 assists might suggest otherwise, Dybala was never really able to fulfil the potential he showed during his time at Palermo or even in the early stages of his Juventus spell. He has been far from consistent in recent years and failed to even attract a Premier League suitor in the summer.

Manchester United’s rejection of Dybala is particularly interesting knowing the fact that the club were determined to sign a playmaker this summer. With Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata leaving the club on a free transfer, there was a dearth of reliable alternatives for the main number ten in Bruno Fernandes.

However, the Red Devils were able to secure the services of Christian Eriksen, perhaps minimising the need for someone like Dybala. The 28-year-old Argentine international himself might be better served at Roma, where he will be given the opportunity to prove himself by former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho and could become a key component in the club’s success in the years to come.

That said, Fabrizio Romano suggests Dybala’s contract with Roma includes a release clause worth only €20 million. It means the former Juventus attacker certainly does not have any long-term plans of remaining in the Italian capital and could be open to joining a bigger club if he can impress the onlookers in the season ahead.
