Newly-promoted Premier League club Nottingham Forest are reportedly edging closer to signing Neco Williams in a £16 million deal.
According to Daily Telegraph, Nottingham Forest are closing in on signing Liverpool right-back Neco Williams. The newly-promoted Premier League club are hopeful of completing a £16 million deal, with the full-back keen on the switch, even though the Reds are demanding £20 million to part ways with him.
Williams is a Liverpool youth product and rose through the ranks to make his first-team debut in the 2019/20 season. However, the presence of Trent Alexander-Arnold has restricted the Wales international to just 33 first-team appearances across three seasons, and the situation will not improve with Alexander-Arnold a guarantee for the spot for the foreseeable future.
The 21-year-old still has three years remaining on his contract with the Reds, but a summer exit seems the most logical move for all parties involved. Williams has been courted by the likes of Fulham and Southampton, but Nottingham Forest seem to have won the race with the Liverpool full-back eager to play under Steve Cooper.
Liverpool were hoping that a deal could be struck for a £20 million fee. But as per the report by Daily Telegraph, the newly-promoted Premier League club are hopeful that they can make the breakthrough for £16 million. They have already agreed on personal terms with the player, and talks are ongoing with Liverpool over the finer details of the transfer.
Djed Spence occupied the right-back spot for Nottingham Forest last season in the EFL Championship and did pretty well to help them gain the promotion. However, Spence returned to Middlesbrough after the loan spell, leaving the position vacant. The England under-21 international is now set to join Tottenham Hotspur.
Nottingham Forest, too, were eager to sign Spence permanently, but Tottenham have managed to beat them to the right-back. This forced the newly-promoted side to shift their focus towards Williams, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Fulham.
The 21-year-old defender made 14 appearances for the Cottagers, who also gained promotion to the Premier League this season, scoring and assisting twice each in the league. The Liverpool defender is now closing in on a £16 million switch to Nottingham Forest.
