Hertha Berlin defender Jordan Torunarigha is “hesitant” about signing a contract extension amid interest from West Ham.
According to a report from SportBILD, Jordan Torunarigha has appeared reluctant in penning a new contract at Hertha Berlin. The defender is aware of the interest from West Ham United and feels he may have an opportunity to seal a lucrative move to the Premier League.
A centre-back by trade, Torunarigha was widely regarded as one of the most talented defensive prospects to come out of Hertha’s youth ranks. But after failing to make an impression in the Bundesliga, he was shipped out to KAA Gent in January, on a short-term loan deal.
The defender did not disappoint in Belgium, becoming a key defensive outlet for Gent. The 24-year-old made an impression with his imposing frame at the back, coupled with his aerial prowess and dogged defensive mentality. He ended up featuring in 15 competitive matches for the club before returning to Hertha.
Following his return, many expect Torunarigha to play a key role for Hertha after they narrowly evaded relegation from the Bundesliga this past season. However, the capital club have already brought in Filip Uremovic and have up to six options in central defence, which has compelled the 24-year-old to hold off on a contract extension.
Torunarigha’s situation at Hertha Berlin has now put West Ham United on red alert. After spending a fortune on Nayef Aguerd earlier this summer, it appears the Londoners are aiming to further strengthen their options at the back by adding a new face in central defence.
The Hammers have been linked with a move to Manchester City outcast Nathan Ake. But the Dutchman is thought to be too expensive for the club, thus making Torunarigha an appealing option for coach David Moyes. West Ham are believed to have made an enquiry for the defender already.
However, the east Londoners must be wary of the German’s struggles in the Bundesliga and his tendency to perform inconsistently. He also tends to struggle in high-pressure situations, which might make him a poor competitor for the likes of Craig Dawson, Aguerd and Kurt Zouma next season.
Although Torunarigha will be available for a cut-price deal this summer, West Ham should ideally invest in a more consistent young defender who can offer higher potential.
