Newcastle United interested in Neymar

Newcastle United are among several Premier League clubs interested in signing Brazilian superstar Neymar, who can leave PSG this summer.

According to Rudy Galetti, Newcastle United have been touted as a possible destination for Neymar since they are one of the few clubs in Europe that can afford the gigantic package attached to the Brazilian international.

Neymar’s highly controversial stint with PSG looks to be nearing an end. Regarded as one of the most talented forwards in the world of football, the Brazilian has not fulfilled his potential at Parc des Princes and ultimately failed in his quest to make PSG the best team in the world since making his world-record €222 million transfer from Barcelona in 2017.

The Brazilian’s reputation has suffered the consequences of his team’s repeated shortcomings in the UEFA Champions League, while the 30-year-old forward has struggled with lack of form and injuries during his time in Paris, demonstrated by the fact that he made over 20 league appearances only once throughout his five-year tenure.

Last season, the PSG ace managed 13 goals and eight assists from 28 appearances in all competitions and was subject to jeers from the Parisians faithful in a season regularly hampered by niggling injuries.

Despite signing a new four-year deal until 2027 only last year, the Brazilian’s imminent future in the French capital is believed to be up in the air. And a summer move could be on the cards as reports suggest Neymar is looking for a move away, while PSG’s new sporting director, Luis Campos, does not consider the Brazilian a part of his rebuild project.

With Kylian Mbappe now the ‘poster boy’ of the project both on and off the field, Neymar’s standing at PSG is beginning to dwindle. President Nasser Al-Khelaifi’s critical comments directed at Neymar appear to be the tip of the iceberg for the Brazilian, who is seriously considering leaving Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

This development has paved the way for links with several Premier League clubs. Chelsea, Manchester United, and Newcastle United are reported to be clubs that can afford Neymar. Keeping aside the fact that he is one of the world’s highest-paid players, a hefty transfer fee combined with his wages and bonuses makes him an almost untouchable commodity in the market.

Newcastle United, for one, have been constantly brought into the mix as a possible destination for Neymar. The Magpies have done some solid business so far, and even though one would expect them to make a high-profile somewhere down the line this summer, it is still hard to see the PSG forward rocking up at St. James’ Park due to the finances involved.

The Brazilian is a world-class player who will instantly raise Newcastle’s quality and popularity around the continent. But there are serious doubts about his ability to handle the rigours of the Premier League, given his poor fitness record.

Furthermore, if a report from the Daily Mail is to be believed, the new owners are adamant about not breaking their wage structure and could sell Allan Saint-Maximin to balance their books. So signing Neymar, who nets almost six times the weekly wage-packet of Newcastle’s top earner, is a non-starter in current circumstances under Financial Fair Play’s watch.
