Joe Gomez set to sign Liverpool contract in pre-season

Joe Gomez could end speculation surrounding his future by signing a new deal at Liverpool during pre-season.

According to The Telegraph, Joe Gomez is set to sign a new deal at Liverpool during pre-season to put speculation surrounding his future to bed. The defender has been lacking regular game-time at the club, but the Reds and Jurgen Klopp have faith in his ability.

Joe Gomez endured an indifferent season after lacking regular playtime. Jurgen Klopp took time to re-integrate the defender after an injury spell he suffered early in 2021. The manager had plenty of options in place of the English centre-back and only used him sporadically.

Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Ibrahima Konate staying fit for the whole season kept Gomez on the bench for most parts. However, whenever called into action, the defender kept his performance levels to the optimum, helping the team push for the Premier League and other honours.

Speculation around Gomez and his future grew as the season ended, with several clubs seeing their name linked with the centre-back. At those interested teams, the England international could have been expected to play week in and week out, but it seems Klopp wants to keep the star within his ranks.

Gomez could be Liverpool’s third or fourth centre-half next season, depending on how Klopp rotates the team. He could continue to get regular minutes and even play many games as a starter considering the manager’s liking for rotation.

Liverpool have been planning on offering a new deal to Gomez since the beginning of May and are set to execute their objective. The defender could sign his contract as soon as he returns for pre-season training.

Gomez largely covered for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back in the second half of the last season after Neco Williams was sent to Fulham on loan. The Welshman may leave the club in the summer after Liverpool received multiple offers for the right-back. But the Reds have already agreed on a deal for Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen. So Gomez could likely be used as a centre-half more often in the future.

The new contract makes complete sense in many ways, and the Reds have done good work retaining one of their talented and reliable defenders.
