Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly received a boost in pursuit of Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen, who wishes to move on from Brentford this summer.
According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Christian Eriksen has decided not to sign a new contract with Premier League side Brentford amidst interest from former club Tottenham Hotspur.
It has been just over a year since the shocking incident involving Eriksen at the UEFA Euro 2020 when he collapsed mid-match when Denmark were playing Finland due to cardiac arrhythmia. Following the episode, the 30-year-old was released by Inter Milan, and after recovering and recuperating sufficiently, the playmaker joined Brentford on a Bosman deal in the January transfer window.
Eriksen’s return to action was one of the biggest feel-good stories of the 2021/22 Premier League season. And the Danish playmaker showed that he had not lost a step, as he helped Brentford achieve a mid-table finish, producing a tally of one goal and four assists from 11 matches in the Premier League.
Eriksen had signed a short-term contract with Brentford, which expires at the end of June. The Bees are intent on keeping him beyond that and have reportedly submitted a fresh proposal for the 30-year-old.
However, according to Alfredo Pedulla, Eriksen is ready to snub the offer from Thomas Frank’s side as he wishes to join a top club and play in the UEFA Champions League again. This development comes as a major boost for Tottenham Hotspur, who have held an interest in re-signing their former playmaker.
Eriksen spent over six years at Tottenham, having joined the club from Ajax in the summer of 2013, before leaving for Inter Milan in January 2020. During his time at the north London outfit, the Danish international established himself as one of the best creative midfielders in the Premier League, and went on to chalk up 64 goals and 90 assists from 304 appearances.
Tottenham have lacked the presence of a creative midfielder of Eriksen’s ilk since his departure as the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso failed to click at the club and will depart permanently this summer. It opens up room for the Lilywhites to bring Eriksen back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to add the element of creativity, quality and experience to their roster.
Antonio Conte knows the midfielder, having signed him at Inter Milan and, as per the report, is keen on a reunion. With Eriksen turning down Brentford’s offer, a return to Tottenham could be on the cards, although they will have to battle several other Premier League clubs to land his signature.
