According to 90min, Newcastle United have agreed personal terms with Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson over a summer move. The Magpies are currently in talks with the Red Devils to strike a deal but are yet to reach an agreement.
Henderson, after a successful two-year loan spell with Sheffield United between 2018 and 2020, broke into the first-team setup at Manchester United and even took over from David de Gea as the club’s first-choice shot-stopper in the second half of the 2020/21 term.
However, an illness coupled with the Spaniard’s return to form kept Henderson out of the starting XI in 2021/22. The English ace did not make even a single Premier League appearance in the recently-concluded season. The lack of game-time has left the 25-year-old Manchester United academy graduate looking for greener pastures and Newcastle now seem a realistic destination.
Eddie Howe’s side were interested in taking the goalkeeper on board in January, but a deal wasn’t struck. They were not bogged down by the initial failure and approached the Red Devils again in May over a possible summer move for Henderson.
While talks with Manchester United are still progressing, Newcastle United have managed to reach an agreement with Henderson over personal terms, taking a giant stride toward signing the goalkeeper in the upcoming transfer window.
With the player and Newcastle agreeing on personal terms, it is now up to the two clubs to strike a deal. The aforementioned report claims the two sides are still discussing whether Henderson’s move will be a loan deal or a permanent signing.
While Newcastle are inclining towards a temporary move, Manchester United prefer a permanent one. The Magpies are hoping that the Red Devils could be convinced for a fee under £20 million, but considering Henderson still has three years left on his contract, the Manchester-based outfit could hold out for more, with a sum of around £40 million being reported.
Henderson has decent Premier League experience under his belt, with 49 appearances for Sheffield United and Manchester United combined. He would be the first-choice keeper at Newcastle as they start a new era under Eddie Howe, with new owners on board. Improved chances will also help him stake a claim for a return to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
