Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah has provided the latest on his contract negotiations with Liverpool while professing his love for the club.
In a conversation with FourFourTwo, Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah has opened up on the ongoing contract negotiations to extend his stay at Anfield.
The Egyptian ace joined the Reds from AS Roma in the summer of 2017. He has since made 255 appearances for Liverpool, scoring an incredible 155 goals and providing 59 assists. To call his contribution outstanding would be an understatement.
Salah scored twice at the weekend against Manchester United to extend his lead at the top of the Premier League Golden Boot list this season. All of it against the backdrop of a fast expiring Liverpool contract that will expire in 2023 if left unaddressed.
Speaking in the interview, the Egyptian winger admitted that he is unsure if he will stay on at Anfield. He went on to add that the negotiations are not all about money and that the fans are aware of what he is seeking. Exactly what the bone of contention is if not money is debatable.
“I don’t know, I have one year left. I think the fans know what I want, but in the contract, it’s not everything about the money at all. So I don’t know, I can’t tell you exactly. I have one year left and the fans know what I want.”
Salah also added that despite the current standoff of sorts, he is enjoying life in Red unlike anywhere else before. Several of the Egyptian’s best moments for Liverpool have also resulted in them winning major honours and setting numerous records. It is fair to say that Salah has already earned himself a spot in the club’s history books.
“This club means a lot to me – I’ve enjoyed my football here more than anywhere, I gave the club everything and everybody saw that. I’ve had a lot of unbelievable moments here, winning trophies, individual goals, individual trophies. It’s like a family here.”
The Liverpool star’s candid admission about his contract negotiations does not do much to inspire confidence in Liverpool fans. With time running out, there is always the chance that the club might decide to see Salah run down his deal.
It will not be something new for Liverpool given that they did the same with Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum. While both players eventually moved on, it can be argued that they never quite hit the heights they did while on Merseyside.
Salah has a good relationship with the Liverpool fans and is already a club icon if not a legend. He has as much to lose from leaving Anfield as the club and will do well to reach an agreement. Irrespective of what happens, the Egyptian ace is keen to do his best for the club for the remainder of the season.
Salah, for his part, has already etched his name into Liverpool folklore. But he could still gain the status of a legend should he choose to stay put. As Klopp reminded Philippe Coutinho, there is no better place than Liverpool to build one’s legacy.
