Carlo Ancelotti opens up on Marco Asensio’s Real Madrid future

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has spoken out on the future of Marco Asensio, who has been linked with a summer exit from the club.

Speaking to Rai 1 Radio (h/t AS), Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has claimed that he does not know what the future holds for exit-linked forward Marco Asensio. The Italian tactician did insist that he believes the winger was speaking to the club over a new contract.

Asensio has long been heralded as a star in the making at Real Madrid. Having burst onto the scenes in 2016 after a successful loan spell at Espanyol, the 26-year-old was tipped to become a superstar at the club in the early phases of his career.

However, a long-term knee injury halted his development, and since returning from a prolonged spell on the sidelines, Asensio has never been able to hit the heights expected of him. There have been eye-catching performances now and then. But they have come too few and far between, leading to frustrations among the supporters.

Asensio will enter the last 12 months of his contract at the end of the current season. It has led to speculations over his future, with clubs like Arsenal and AC Milan taking an interest in the Spanish international’s situation.

Recent reports have also indicated that Real Madrid might be willing to offload Asensio should an offer of around €25-30 million come their way. Ancelotti has now had his say on the former RCD Mallorca prospect’s situation at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“He is a player with extraordinary quality. He had a serious knee injury which left him out for a long time and with a slow rehabilitation. He is an important player who has helped us. I don’t know what will will happen regarding his future. I think he is talking to the club to renew his contract, but I can only speak about his technical qualities,” the Italian tactician said.

Asensio has featured 36 times across all competitions this season for Real Madrid, bagging ten goals in the process. However, he has not started any of their last four matches in all competitions, casting further doubts over his long-term future at the club.

With Kylian Mbappe expected to arrive in the summer and Real Madrid also pushing for Erling Haaland, Asensio might consider moving away in search of regular game-time at the end of the season.
