Newcastle keen on Manchester United star Dean Henderson

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson in the upcoming summer transfer window.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are prioritising the signing of a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window and have identified Manchester United ace Dean Henderson as one of the potential targets.

Henderson is a product of the Manchester United youth setup. A promising English custodian, he had a successful loan stint at Shrewsbury Town in 2017/18, following which he spent two impressive seasons on loan at Sheffield United. His performances at Bramall Lane earned Henderson his breakthrough at Manchester United last season.

For a brief period, the Englishman even managed to displace David de Gea as the first-choice custodian at Old Trafford and looked all set to begin the current campaign as the No. 1. However, he missed the start of the season after testing positive for COVID-19 and has been unable to make his way into the starting XI ever since, thanks to David de Gea’s supreme form this term.

Frustrated over his lack of game-time, Henderson was linked with an exit in January, with Newcastle interested in signing him. Manchester United also turned down a deadline day loan move to Watford, leaving the academy graduate to warm the benches at the club. The 25-year-old has played just three games all season and is keen on securing an exit in the summer.

And Newcastle have once again emerged as a potential destination for Henderson. The Magpies are keen on revamping their goalkeeping department before the next season. Martin Dubravka, the current No. 1, has done a solid job so far, but the new owners want someone of a younger profile and a higher quality to take over.

It has led to links with Arsenal custodian Bernd Leno, West Bromwich Albion ace Sam Johnstone, who will be a free agent in the summer, and Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga. However, the Spaniard is only seen as a loan target. Henderson, though, continues to remain a prime candidate in the eyes of Newcastle’s scouting department.

Henderson signed a new contract with Manchester United in 2020, extending his stay at the club until the summer of 2025. But given how David de Gea is performing now, the Englishman is unlikely to get a chance to become the No. 1 next term either. So, there is a solid chance that the academy ace will push for an exit come summer. Whether Newcastle can capitalise on the situation remains to be seen.
