Tottenham battle Manchester United for Mattias Svanberg

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are reportedly among the clubs interested in securing the services of Bologna midfielder Mattias Svanberg.

A recent report from SPORT has offered an update on the future of Mattias Svanberg. It appears the 23-year-old Bologna midfielder is set to leave the club at the end of the season and join a top team in Europe. Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are among the clubs interested in his services this summer.

But Manchester United and Tottenham are set to face stiff competition from a host of Serie A clubs, including Juventus, Inter Milan, AS Roma and AC Milan. It could spice up the race to sign the young midfielder, who has established himself as one of the rising stars in Swedish football and is primed to join a top club next season.

A central midfielder by trade, Svanberg rose into prominence back in the 2018/19 campaign, during his maiden season in Serie A. Since joining the club, the 23-year-old has notched up 115 competitive appearances, chipping in with nine goals and seven assists.

His numbers are quite impressive for a central midfielder. But the Swede has impressed the onlookers with his work ethic and versatility in the middle of the park, making him a useful asset in the second line of press.

Svanberg’s rapid rise to prominence has not gone unnoticed, with Tottenham boss Antonio Conte targeting him as a potential replacement for Harry Winks. The Englishman is expected to leave the club in the summer after falling out of favour under Conte. He has no shortage of suitors either, with both Crystal Palace and Southampton reportedly keen on securing his services.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are likely targeting the 23-year-old as a direct competitor for Fred. The Red Devils are bracing themselves for a future without Paul Pogba as well, although the Frenchman has recently issued a cryptic update on his future at Old Trafford.

However, it remains to be seen whether either of Manchester United and Tottenham manage to fend off interest from the Serie A giants in the race to sign Mattias Svanberg. Given the 23-year-old midfielder’s immense success, he might opt to remain in Italy to further his career rather than making the big leap toward the Premier League.

Perhaps a lot could depend on how much game-time either of the two teams are willing to offer, as clubs like Juventus certainly are not in a position to make the Swede their first choice midfielder next season.
