Aston Villa are reportedly preparing a bumper new deal for right-back Matty Cash amid interest from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.
According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are eager to tie Matty Cash to a bumper new contract amidst growing interest from Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old will still have three years remaining on his current deal after the ongoing season, but the Premier League side are ready to offer him a new, improved deal to extend his stay at the club.
A Wycombe Wanderers youth product, Cash was snapped up by Nottingham Forest as a 17-year-old in 2014. He was promoted to the Forest first-team following a loan spell with Dag & Red FC, and then strung a run of solid performances to attract Aston Villa’s interest.
The Villans eventually signed Cash in a €15 million deal in 2020 and he has since made 59 appearances for them, scoring three and assisting six goals. This season, he has played 31 matches for Aston Villa, and he has scored three and assisted four goals.
Cash’s recent form has been highly impressive, with a return of two goals and assists each in his last five Premier League appearances. The 24-year-old is a strong tackler and does not shy away from making forward forays as well, making him a complete full-back. But Aston Villa could lose their key defender soon, with Atletico Madrid keen on signing him.
Atletico Madrid lost Kieran Trippier to Newcastle United in the January transfer window earlier this year. The reigning La Liga champions have identified Cash as a potential replacement for the English right-back. They have reportedly sent scouts to watch the Polish international this season and could make a summer move for him.
To ward off interest from the La Liga giants, Aston Villa are preparing to offer the right-back a new deal. This season, Steven Gerrard has used him regularly, with Cash starting all 29 of their Premier League matches thus far. The Villans have been solid under Gerrard and are currently ninth in the Premier League table.
With Aston Villa seemingly heading in the right direction under the former Liverpool midfielder and linked with a permanent move for Philippe Coutinho, Cash could be tempted to extend his stay with them. But with Atletico Madrid offering consistent Champions League football and the chance to win silverware, the Premier League outfit might have to work hard to hold on to the 24-year-old.
