Italian champions Inter Milan are reportedly eyeing Manchester United star Edinson Cavani as they look to reinforce their attack ahead of the 2022/23 season.
According to Calciomercato, defending Italian champions, Inter Milan, have shortlisted Manchester United star Edinson Cavani among three strikers they are keeping tabs on ahead of the 2022 summer transfer window.
The Nerazzurri are the top scorers in the Italian top-flight this season. However, the preferred duo of Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez have both hit a drought in recent weeks. Joaquin Correa has struggled to impress, while Alexis Sanchez has of late acted as an impactful substitute.
A run of just one win in the last seven Serie A games has seen Inter fall away in the race for this season’s Scudetto. A major reason for their inability to secure wins has been the struggle to score goals. It is no surprise that Simone Inzaghi’s side are seeking to reinforce their frontline at the end of the current campaign.
Ajax striker Sebastien Haller, Napoli’s Dries Mertens and Manchester United’s Cavani appear to be the three players in the fray. Of the three, Cavani could be the easiest to attain given his status as a free agent in the summer.
Cavani joined Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2020. He impressed in his debut campaign at Old Trafford but has failed to repeat the heroics this time around. Injuries and the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho have limited him to just 17 appearances across all competitions this season, totalling a mere 761 minutes on the field.
The Uruguayan is 35 and is not getting any younger. He looks set to move on once his contract at the Theatre of Dreams is up, and a return to Serie A could offer him a familiar respite. Cavani spent several seasons at Palermo and SSC Napoli and is intimately familiar with the Italian game.
Given his advanced age, a move to Italy will see him compete in a physically less demanding league. He would certainly add more teeth to the Inter frontline as a proven goalscorer. However, he is likely to be a stop-gap solution at the very best. It was in Serie A that Cavani initially made a name for himself in Europe. A return to the country will see his career reach the full circle, at least as far as the time in Europe is considered.
