Fulham are reportedly considering an approach for Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez, who is valued at £23 million.
According to Express, Fulham are expected to raid Liverpool this summer in pursuit of Joe Gomez. The talented centre-back has emerged as a top target for the London outfit, who are more than likely to earn promotion back to the Premier League next season, just a year after being relegated to the Championship.
The elevation to the top-flight could offer Fulham the opportunity to bolster their squad significantly. The Cottagers have already found immense success with the signing of Liverpool defender Neco Williams on loan and are working on prolonging his stay at Craven Cottage.
Williams, though, might not be the only Liverpool defender to appear on the radar of the Championship league leaders, who have identified Gomez as the ideal man to spearhead their defence next season, alongside Tosin Adarabioyo.
Formerly of Charlton Athletic, Gomez has not had the best of seasons for Liverpool. After returning from injury at the start of the campaign, the Englishman has fallen behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and even summer signing Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order. It has restricted his overall game-time to just over 100 minutes of league football.
Although Jurgen Klopp has repeatedly assured Gomez of his future at Anfield, the apparent lack of game-time is having a detrimental effect on his chances of featuring in the FIFA World Cup for England later this year.
It could ultimately compel the defender to seek a way out of Anfield in the summer. The player was even linked with a move away in January, but the transfer was blocked by Liverpool, who were keen on holding on to his services amid fears over a lack of depth in the defensive unit.
Gomez has earned only one start since January, which is indicative of his diminishing role at Liverpool. As such, an exit could be on the horizon, with Fulham more than willing to pounce on the opportunity. However, Liverpool value their defender at £23 million, which could prove to be a major obstacle for the Cottagers.
Fortunately for Gomez, Fulham are not the only club interested in him as existing Premier League giants such as Tottenham, Newcastle United, and West Ham have expressed the desire to sign the 24-year-old. While it remains to be seen whether they will be keen on meeting the defender’s valuation, Liverpool certainly have a battle on their hands in the bid to keep hold of the Englishman.
