Luke Shaw prepared to sign new Manchester United contract

Manchester United star Luke Shaw is reportedly open to extending his stay at Old Trafford.

According to The Guardian, Manchester United star Luke Shaw has revealed his willingness to pen a new deal with the Red Devils soon.

The English international was among the best young talents during his formative years at Southampton. An excellent breakout campaign in the Premier League alerted interested parties to his talent, and Manchester United eventually signed him for a then-record price for a British teenager.

It has been eight years since he moved to the Theatre of Dreams, but Shaw is yet to showcase his best. There have been purple patches, most recently in the 2021/22 season, where he impressed for both club and country. However, he has been unable to continue in the same vein of form this season.

Shaw remains the first choice left-back at Old Trafford and has always been able to find a way back into the first XI despite several setbacks. Still just 26, there is a lot of football left in the English international. As things stand, he is keen to spend a good chunk of that at Manchester United.

Shaw is ready to extend his contract at Manchester United, and it gives the club something to think about ahead of the summer transfer window. The defender’s current deal expires in the summer of 2023, with the Red Devils having an option to extend it for another year.

In case talks over a new contract are started, Shaw would be in line to get a hike on his current £150,000-a-week wages once fresh terms are agreed upon.

While it is always good to see the first-team regulars keen to commit their futures to the club, Manchester United will be well advised to take a patient approach with Shaw. The 26-year-old has looked poor this season, and an extension at this point might not be the most prudent move.

There are left-backs in the Premier League who perform better than Shaw and do so on a more consistent basis. Unless he is ready to step up and prove his ability on the field, it is in the Red Devils’ best interests to not tie down the player to a long-term deal.

In recent years, Manchester United have fallen behind their rivals and will need a proactive transfer approach to make up for the lost time. Handing non-performing or inconsistent players long term lucrative deals is not the way forward.
