Newcastle United remain in contention to sign Stade Reims forward Hugo Ekitike in the summer transfer window.
According to Calciomercato, Newcastle United have retained their interest in Hugo Ekitike. The Premier League outfit were closely linked with a move for the Stade Reims forward in the January transfer window, but their proposal was rebuffed by the player, who favoured an extended stay in France.
However, Newcastle remain keen on the services of the young forward and are hoping that he would be open to a move in the summer transfer window. They are certainly not alone in the pursuit, though, with both Arsenal and Manchester United also expressing the desire to sign the 19-year-old next season.
With an impressive tally of ten goals in 24 competitive appearances, Ekitike has been one of the rising stars in the French top-flight this season. Standing at 1.90m, the attacker has impressed onlookers with the unique combination of height and pace that he offers, which is coupled with his dribbling skills and footwork.
The youngster has also combined admirably with his attacking teammates, which serves as an indicator of his technical prowess. As such, the 19-year-old has become one of the most in-demand young attackers in France.
Newcastle United, in particular, have been on the hunt for the Frenchman throughout the year so far. Ekitike has been identified as the ideal man to spearhead the Magpies’ attack next season, as they slowly look to transition from the likes of Chris Wood and Callum Wilson to more quality and consistent attackers.
Ekitike’s goalscoring prowess, combined with his technical efficiency, should make him an ideal strike-partner to the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser next season, as Eddie Howe looks to stamp his tactical identity on the club.
However, as mentioned earlier, Newcastle United are set to face strong resistance in the pursuit of Ekitike. The teenage sensation is already a target for Manchester United and Arsenal, whereas Reims themselves could hold out for a hefty fee for their attacking asset.
Fortunately, Newcastle themselves have no shortage of alternatives. In addition to Ekitike, they have been linked with Sevilla frontman Youssef En-Nesyri, while struggling Real Madrid forward Eden Hazard remains a dream signing for the new owners in their bid to attract star players.
