Newcastle United are reportedly leading the race to sign Torino defender Wilfried Singo and are ready to put €20 million on the table for his signing.
According to Torino Granata, Newcastle United are willing to shell out a sum of €20 million to secure the services of Wilfried Singo from Torino, making them the favourites to sign him.
The 21-year-old joined Torino in January 2019 from AS Denguele in Ivory Coast and played for the club’s Primavera outfit initially. The right-back made his senior debut for the Granata in August later that year but became a regular in the side only from 2020. To date, Singo has made 64 appearances for the Italian outfit, scoring five goals and registering seven assists.
The right-sided full-back has been in particularly impressive form in the ongoing campaign, which has seen him attract the attention of several Premier League clubs. Indeed, the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur have recently been credited with an interest in the Ivory Coast international.
Now, it seems like Newcastle United have also entered the fray for Singo’s signing and are even believed to have taken the lead in the race. The Magpies invested in a new right-back during the January transfer window when they signed Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid. The England international made a significant impact upon arrival before picking up a serious injury.
Beyond him, though, there is a distinct lack of quality in the right-back position. The inconsistent Javi Manquillo is not being used regularly by manager Eddie Howe, while Emil Krafth is one among seven players who are set to be sold at the end of the season, as per a report from The Times.
Newcastle United will need to bring in a new right-back to compete with and cover for Trippier in such a situation. Singo’s age, physicality and attacking intent make him a viable option for the Tyneside giants. With Trippier set to turn 32 in a few months, the Ivorian can also be a readymade long-term replacement for the former Tottenham man when the time comes for him to move on.
As per the report, Newcastle are willing to pay €20 million to secure Singo’s signing, which has put them at the front of the queue. Whether they go ahead with the deal for the Torino defender remains to be seen.
