Liverpool are reportedly interested in Darwin Nunez as Jurgen Klopp eyes reinforcements for his squad’s attacking unit.
According to Football Insider, Darwin Nunez is a target for Liverpool heading into the summer transfer window, with Benfica also open to cashing in on the striker. Jurgen Klopp wants to sign the Uruguayan as part of a new-look Reds attack for next season.
Darwin Nunez has been attracting the attention of clubs across Europe since joining Benfica. The Uruguayan forward’s reputation has soared in the last two years as he continues to be in prolific form. He has scored 23 goals across 29 appearances this season in all competitions for Benfica, making him one of Europe’s most in-form strikers.
Nunez has significant interest from the Premier League, and many clubs attempted to prise him away in January. West Ham United had a reported £40 million bid rejected late in the previous window, as Benfica reportedly wanted more for their star man. Newcastle United were also plotting a late move, although nothing came of it.
The Hammers will find it difficult to land Nunez as some of their bigger rivals are interested in the striker. Manchester United are already scouting the Uruguayan international, while Arsenal could also switch their attention towards him after conceding defeat in the pursuit of Dusan Vlahovic.
Liverpool have now entered the race, with the Merseysiders having a definite interest in the striker. Jurgen Klopp wants the club to recruit the best talents to maintain their current level, with Nunez seen as the perfect addition to his attacking setup.
The Reds have several big decisions to make in the summer regarding their current crop of attackers. The primary concern is the future of Mohamed Salah, who is yet to commit to a new deal. If Liverpool and the Egyptian cannot agree on an extension, a sale would be the likeliest outcome, with one year left on his contract in the summer.
Meanwhile, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino also find themselves in a similar situation, and both of them could be sold if they do not extend their contracts, although Liverpool want to tie Firmino down to a renewal. Liverpool bolstered their attack in the January transfer window by signing Luis Diaz from FC Porto and could soon return to Portugal for Nunez.
Nunez, 22, will likely cost £55 million, according to the Football Insider report. Benfica are reportedly open to a sale as they might want to cash in when the demand for the striker peaks.
