Jesse Marsch remains in contention to replace Marcelo Bielsa, should the Argentine leave Leeds United at the end of the season.
A recent report from the Telegraph has offered an update on the future of Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa, whose contract with the club expires at the end of the season. There remains a strong possibility that the Argentine will leave the club in the summer.
Although the decision is yet to be made, Leeds United have earmarked at least three coaches as potential replacements. One of them is American manager Jesse Marsch, who is currently on a sabbatical after lasting less than six months at RB Leipzig.
Formerly a player of DC United, Marsch has established himself as one of the top coaches in North America. He has worked closely with the Red Bull franchise, coaching three different teams including the New York Red Bulls, RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig. He was also the assistant manager of USMNT head coach Bob Bradley during the early stages of his managerial career.
As one would expect from someone so deeply rooted in the Red Bull franchise, Marsch is known for his intense style of play with a high-risk, high-reward philosophy that somewhat resembles Marcelo Bielsa’s tactical setup at Leeds. In addition to his spirited approach to the game, the American is proficient when it comes to nurturing young talents.
During his time as a manager, the 48-year-old played a vital role in developing the careers of Dominik Szoboszlai, Hwang Hee-chan, Erling Haaland, Karim Adeyemi and even Brenden Aaronson, who is reportedly a target for Leeds United next summer.
Leeds United haven’t had the best of seasons as they are currently embroiled in a relegation battle. But there is a strong feeling that things may improve in the new season as star players like Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford recover from their injury woes.
However, time is slowly running out for the Whites as they look to make a firm decision on the future of coach Bielsa. As per the report, the final decision on the appointment will be taken by sporting director Victor Orta and the club’s principal shareholder Andrea Radrizzani.
While Marsch remains a top target, Leeds may need to act swiftly, as the American tactician is also being courted by La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao. So it will be interesting to see what the future holds – not just for the club, but for the managers in question – as we head towards the business end of the 2021/22 campaign.
