Liverpool are reportedly interested in Bayern Munich midfielder Corentin Tolisso, who will be a free agent in the summer.
According to Calciomercato, Corentin Tolisso has emerged as a target for Liverpool for the next summer transfer window. The 27-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and Liverpool are among several European clubs interested in acquiring the midfielder’s services.
Tolisso joined Bayern Munich in 2017 for a then-record fee amidst a lot of hype and comparisons to former Bayern star Toni Kroos. He made a bright start to his career at the Allianz Arena. But his progression has stalled drastically since a serious knee injury back in 2018. To date, the 27-year-old has made 113 appearances for Die Roten, chipping in with 21 goals and 15 assists along the way.
The Frenchman has struggled to nail down a starting spot in the Bayern setup owing to injury issues last season and appeared not to be in Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann’s plans at the start of this season. He has made just ten starts across all competitions for the reigning Bundesliga champions this term but has enjoyed somewhat of a minor resurgence lately, scoring twice in his last four top-flight games.
His contractual situation has alerted the likes of Real Madrid, Lyon and Newcastle over a potential free summer swoop. Now, Liverpool also seem to have joined the queue and are monitoring the French international extensively.
The interest from Liverpool is understandable, considering they have yet to replace midfield enforcer Georginio Wijnaldum, who left for Paris Saint-Germain last summer. Furthermore, club captain Jordan Henderson has largely under-performed this term while James Milner is is in the twilight of his career. So the Reds could well be on the lookout for reinforcements in the middle of the park.
Tolisso’s potential move to Anfield makes perfect sense from a tactical standpoint. The Frenchman is quite versatile and can operate in multiple roles in the middle of the park, while he is also suited to Jurgen Klopp’s high defensive line and heavy metal football at Liverpool.
The midfield ace also has a wealth of experience, winning every major domestic competition with the German giants, alongside the prestigious Champions League in 2020. Moreover, he was a part of the France side that lifted the World Cup in 2018.
However, the Reds must take into consideration the injury history of the Bayern Munich midfielder, which makes him a risky target. Liverpool have already seen Thiago Alcantara struggle with recurring injuries since arriving from the German champions, so adding another injury-prone midfielder to their roster in Tolisso might not be a prudent investment – even on a Bosman move.
The 27-year-old looked destined to leave the Bavarian giants at the end of this campaign. However, his recent revival means the Bundesliga outfit has taken a U-turn on their previous stance and have reopened talks over a new deal with the player’s representatives. It remains to be seen if Tolisso moves to Liverpool on a free transfer next summer or ends up extending his stay with Bayern.
