Newcastle United are reportedly showing interest in making a move for Brighton & Hove Albion defender Dan Burn before the January transfer window closes.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United have set their sights on Brighton and Hove Albion star Dan Burn as they aim to stave off relegation from the Premier League this season.
The Magpies are currently in the 18th spot and have won a mere two games all season. Unless results pick up fast, there is a real chance that they might go down this season. Given their newfound wealth and deep pockets, Newcastle appear to be making the most of the January transfer window to provide them with a fighting chance of retaining their top-flight status.
The Tyneside club has already signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood. The Magpies have also agreed on a deal for Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimares, though the move is yet to be concluded.
With just a few days remaining until the transfer market slams to a shut, Newcastle United are now eyeing a new defender. They have set their sights on Brighton defender Burn, who continues to impress at the Amex Stadium. The 29-year-old has featured in 13 Premier League games for Brighton as Graham Potter’s side continues to impress this season.
Primarily a centre-back, the Englishman can also do a job at left-back. A giant of a player, Burn is a formidable force to be reckoned with in the air and can hold his own with the ball at his feet. More so, the 29-year-old is also not afraid to stick his foot in when needed. His fighting qualities will add steel to what has been a rather porous Newcastle backline.
Burn has a mere 18 months to go on his current deal with Brighton, and there appears to be optimism in the Newcastle camp that an agreement can be reached. The Magpies, however, have suffered a setback as their opening bid of £8 million was rejected by Brighton.
Whether they will now return with an improved bid or focus their attentions elsewhere remains to be seen. With just days to go before the winter transfer window closes, the Magpies face a race against time to make their move.
Burn’s potential return to St. James’ Park has the tinge of a fairytale to it. The 29-year-old defender was released by Newcastle as an 11-year-old and plied his trade elsewhere before establishing himself as a Premier League star. The thought of him now returning to Tyneside as a saviour would be his career coming full circle.
