Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing a late January move for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, who is rated highly by Steven Gerrard.
According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are set to make a last-gasp attempt to sign Joe Gomez. The Liverpool centre-back is highly rated by coach Steven Gerrard, who is prepared to raid his former club in an attempt to further strengthen his defensive options before the January transfer window comes to a close.
Aston Villa have had a busy window so far, having brought in Lucas Digne from Everton. They also managed to convince Philippe Coutinho to complete a loan move from Barcelona. Both the players have enjoyed an excellent start to life at Villa Park, but it appears Gerrard is keen on upgrading his options at the heart of the defence.
While Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings have both done well, for the most part, the club lacks a proper alternative especially amid uncertainty over the future of West Ham United target Kortney Hause. Gerard is prepared to fill the hole by bringing in Joe Gomez from Liverpool.
The Englishman has endured a difficult time at Anfield after returning from a Patella problem that kept him out on the sidelines for almost eight months. Since returning to full fitness, the defender has struggled to make himself a first-team regular, falling behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and even new signing Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order.
Liverpool are expected to part ways with at least one centre-back in January. Nathaniel Phillips was the likely candidate for the majority of the season amid interest from Watford. But the Hornets are yet to close the deal so far, and with Aston Villa stepping up their pursuit of Gomez, Liverpool fans could be in for a late surprise.
Having featured in only 12 minutes of league action so far, Gomez will understandably be keen on securing a move elsewhere in an attempt to redeem his career. With the 2022 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, it is essential for the defender to get regular game-time throughout the year.
Although the report fails to mention whether Aston Villa are looking for a permanent deal or simply a short-term loan move, they can certainly offer Gomez the opportunity to make a name for himself during the second half of the campaign. However, with just a week left before the transfer window slams to a shut, the Villans must be swift in their approach, if they are to sign the Liverpool defender this month.
