Transfer News: Arsenal rival Aston Villa in Glen Kamara pursuit

Arsenal are reportedly ready to enter the race for Glen Kamara this month, with the Rangers midfielder also being pursued by Aston Villa.

According to a report from 90 min, Arsenal are reportedly interested in a move for Glen Kamara in this window as Mikel Arteta pushes to sign a midfielder to solve their shortages in the position. They will have to rival Aston Villa among other clubs for the Rangers midfielder.

Arsenal are stepping up their efforts to sign a reliable midfield option in the current window and have already been linked with several midfielders. Mikel Arteta’s charges have been depleted in the position owing to COVID-19 infection, Africa Cup of Nations duty, injuries and suspension in recent weeks.

As things stand, Albert Sambi Lokonga is the only available senior midfield option in the Arsenal ranks after Granit Xhaka received a straight red card against Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final first leg. There have been talks of a loan signing in the form of Arthur Melo, although Juventus have yet to respond to a possible offer from the Gunners.

There has also been a story about Arsenal holding talks with Leicester City for Youri Tielemans in recent days, although that is likely to be a summer move. The main focus remains on bringing in a midfielder that fits Arteta’s thought process for the squad.

The latest name to emerge is Glen Kamara, who was reportedly a summer target for Arsenal before he renewed his deal with Rangers around September. With the new contract keeping him tied at Ibrox until 2025, the Scottish champions have the upper hand in any possible negotiations for the midfielder.

Kamara has been an important player in the Rangers setup, formerly under Steven Gerrard. The midfielder was pivotal in their title-winning campaign last term, and his performances have prompted Aston Villa to consider a move this window.

If Arsenal are serious about signing the Finland international this month, their biggest competition is Aston Villa and their manager Gerrard. Kamara might even be inclined to reunite with his former Rangers boss over rejoining his youth club Arsenal if he had the choice.

However, considering the level of football the Gunners can offer the midfielder, it could prove a tricky decision for the Finnish star. As things stand, a formal approach has not been made by either Arsenal or Aston Villa for Kamara.
