Traansfer News: Tottenham keen on signing Matthias Ginter

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly emerged as a potential destination for Borussia Monchengladbach’s wantaway defender Matthias Ginter.

According to Sport, Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on Matthias Ginter. The 27-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach defender has emerged in the list of Antonio Conte’s desired transfer targets, with the Italian keen on immediate reinforcements.

Ginter has recently announced he will be leaving Gladbach at the end of the season when his existing contract comes to an end. However, it appears Spurs are open to making a move in January and acquiring his services on a cut-price deal.

Tottenham’s desire to sign the German international this month is perhaps indicative of the club’s desperation for a major defensive overhaul. Although the Lilywhites have enjoyed a promising start to life under Conte, the temerity of their centre-backs has been questioned, especially with the injury-related absence of Cristian Romero.

Young centre-back Japhet Tanganga is already facing an uncertain future at Tottenham amid interest from Juventus and AC Milan, whereas Joe Rodon is almost certain to leave the club. The Welshman has fallen out of favour under Conte and has no future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium despite the inconsistencies of some of the first-team options.

The January transfer window now hands Tottenham an excellent opportunity to refresh their defensive unit. Signing a new centre-back remains a priority for Conte, with Ginter emerging as an ideal candidate.

With almost 300 appearances in the Bundesliga and 46 caps for the German national team, the 27-year-old is highly rated due to his experience at the top level. His aerial prowess and no-nonsense defensive mentality should tune in seamlessly with Conte’s tactical setup as well, making him a viable option for Tottenham.

Although Ginter has confirmed that he is set to spend the remainder of the campaign at Gladbach, Tottenham believe a deal can still be struck in January. Their hopes have turned into possibility in recent days after Gladbach’s capture of Marvin Friedrich. The Union Berlin centre-back has joined the Foals in January as a direct long-term replacement for Ginter.

One may expect the Bundesliga giants to make up for Freidrich’s investment by cashing in on Ginter. It should pave the way for Spurs to snap up the German international, although they are set to face stiff competition from Bayern Munich. The Bavarians are reportedly in advanced talks with the defender surrounding a Bosman move in the summer, so it is up to Tottenham to lure the player to England by offering him a lucrative deal in January.
