Everton are reportedly expected to make an improved offer to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff in January.
A recent report from Daily Express, as relayed by Goodison News, has offered an update on the future of Sean Longstaff. The newspaper suggests that the Newcastle United midfielder is having second thoughts about committing to a contract extension at St. James’ Park, thus putting Everton on red alert.
The Toffees had made an initial attempt to sign Longstaff earlier this month, but it was swiftly rejected by Newcastle United. However, the Merseyside giants are prepared to make an improved offer in an attempt to lure him to Goodison Park this month. The midfielder’s current contract at St. James’ Park expires at the end of the season, with Everton hoping that they can acquire his services on a cut-price deal.
Everton’s interest in Longstaff is hardly surprising as the youngster had initially made his professional breakthrough under the leadership of Rafael Benitez. He was, in fact, one of the breakout stars of the Premier League during the backend of the 2018/19 campaign, featuring in nine league matches and helping Newcastle secure a mid-table finish.
Unfortunately, Longstaff’s development stalled right after Benitez’s departure in 2019. He failed to establish himself as a prominent figure under Steve Bruce, falling behind the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden in the pecking order.
With Newcastle United on the brink of a major overhaul after the takeover from the Saudi Arabia-backed consortium, the young midfielder clearly has no future at the club. Even in the ongoing campaign, the 24-year-old has earned just nine starts in the league, only one of which has come under new coach Eddie Howe.
A January move to Everton could thus make sense, with Benitez seemingly keen on a reunion at Goodison Park. The Spanish tactician is currently looking for midfielders that can offer depth in the team, especially with Andre Gomes struggling with injury and Jean-Philippe Gbamin failing to make an impression.
The Toffees have been linked with a move for Bruno Guimaraes, but Longstaff could be a far safer and cost-effective alternative. His familiarity with Everton coach Benitez may also help him rekindle his form as the Englishman looks to revive his career after a disappointing spell at Newcastle United.
