West Ham United are keen on signing Abdou Diallo from Paris Saint-Germain as David Moyes seeks reinforcements in central defence.
According to L’Equipe (h/t Sport Witness), Paris Saint-Germain defender Abdou Diallo has emerged as a subject of transfer interest from Premier League side West Ham United. The French publication claims the Senegal defender is one of the many defensive options on the Hammers’ shortlist.
West Ham fear their good work so far this season could be derailed by the injuries to key defensive personnel. After beginning the campaign in top form, the Hammers had locked in a place in the top four in the Premier League, before losing important centre-backs Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma to injury, which has hurt their prospects.
David Moyes is now left with Craig Dawson and Issa Diop as his senior central defenders, which is not healthy for the second phase of the season, especially with the club having ambitions of going the distance in Europe. The manager is keen to address the issues with squad depth in this transfer window.
They are linked with a few quality names so far in the window, with Paris Saint-Germain star Abdou Diallo the latest to pop up on their radar. They are likely to face competition for the Senegal international from AC Milan and Newcastle United, although the lure of European football could clinch it in the favour of the Hammers.
Diallo has played a bit-part role for PSG this season, playing nine times in Ligue 1. The former Borussia Dortmund ace has the likes of Marquinhos, Presnel Kimpembe and Sergio Ramos in front of him in the pecking order, and his prospects of regular game-time are unlikely to improve as things stand, which could force him to consider his options should West Ham come calling.
The Hammers also have their sights set on Dortmund’s Dan-Axel Zagadou, who could be available at a knock-down price as his contract runs out in the summer.
There is also the possibility of signing Chelsea star Malang Sarr on loan this month, which could help Moyes offset his temporary problem in central defence. However, Diallo could be a good long-term option for the east London outfit, considering that Dawson and Ogbonna are in their thirties.
It remains to be seen if the Hammers convert their interest into a concrete offer in the coming days. Diallo is away with Senegal at the AFCON and there could be progress made once he returns from the tournament. The PSG star could prove to be a solid option for the current season and the future at the London Stadium.
