Kevin Campbell has backed Alexander Isak to succeed at Arsenal, with the north Londoners considering the Swedish striker as a possible target.
Arsenal have stepped up their search for a new striker in a big way, as recent links to some promising young stars tend to suggest. Mikel Arteta ideally wanted to finish the season with his existing options before bringing in one or two new forwards in the summer summer.
However, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s situation has put the Gabonese striker’s future in doubt, with Newcastle United already the front-runners for his signature. Then there is the subject of Eddie Nketiah and Folarin Balogun, with both youngsters are expected to depart this month, leaving Alexandre Lacazette as Arsenal’s only senior striker.
Arteta and the club have thus accelerated their plans to sign a new forward and being strongly linked with Dusan Vlahovic, Alexander Isak and Jonathan David. The Gunners have already submitted an improved bid for Vlahovic while maintaining their interest in Isak.
Isak was linked with a summer move to Arsenal and has a contract with Real Sociedad until 2026. The length of the deal enables the La Liga club to dictate terms over a fee, and thus far, the quoted figures exceed £75 million. From that aspect, Vlahovic might be more attractive as he could be available for a slightly lower price.
However, former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell believes Isak could be the ideal choice to grace the Emirates pitch. He told Football Insider about the Swede’s qualities that make him ideal for Arsenal.
Campbell said, “I like Isak. He’s a young, strong striker who has got a very good all-round game. Not only does he score, but he can also link the play, run in behind, and win those aerial duels.”
“Getting that all-round striker is really important for Arsenal – as I’ve been saying for a while. The key is that he’s young and coachable. Obviously, he’ll have to develop and learn, but he’s perfect, exactly what Arsenal need.”
It remains to be seen if Arsenal can afford to pay around £75 million to spend on strikers, given their huge outlay in the previous summer. In any case, the Gunners are seriously short on offensive options, which may suggest another impending spending spree, which is rather uncharacteristic of them in a January transfer window.
