Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly in the market for Denis Zakaria, who is set to leave Borussia Monchengladbach.
According to Jonathan Shrager, Liverpool and Manchester United have enquired about the possibility of signing Denis Zakaria. The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder is set to leave the Bundesliga outfit when his contract expires at the end of the season. The 25-year-old has already confirmed he won’t be signing a contract extension, putting multiple clubs on red alert.
However, it appears Liverpool and Manchester United are both exploring the option of signing Zakaria in January. The Premier League giants believe Gladbach could be tempted into a sale, knowing they may otherwise have to be content with the player leaving the club for a free transfer next summer.
As things stand, the Foals are already set to lose another top performer for free in the form of Matthias Ginter. Like Zakaria, the German international has confirmed his desire not to continue at Gladbach, with his contract at Borussia Park expiring in the summer. Ginter is more likely to leave the Bundesliga club at the end of the season, with Bayern Munich reportedly closing in on a Bosman deal.
The pressure is now on Gladbach to make a definite decision on the future of Zakaria. The 25-year-old Swiss international is one of the most in-demand players in Europe, with Aston Villa, Arsenal, and Liverpool keen on his services.
Manchester United are involved in the equation as well, with coach Ralf Rangnick quite familiar with the 25-year-old’s success in the Bundesliga. The German tactician has endured a difficult start to his temporary spell at Old Trafford, and the recent draw with Wolves has only compounded his problems.
Rangnick believes that the ideal course of action now will be to sign a talented midfielder like Zakaria, who can prove to be a significant upgrade over both Fred and Scott McTominay. But it remains to be seen whether they can tackle the competition from Liverpool, knowing the Merseyside giants can offer a far more stable sporting environment.
Jurgen Klopp is also known to be a huge admirer of the Gladbach starlet, as the German looks to enhance his options in central midfield this January.
However, it won’t be surprising to see Zakaria opting to remain in the Bundesliga. In addition to Liverpool and Manchester United, the two German giants Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are also seeking the opportunity to sign the midfielder in January, with Dortmund, in particular, giving the 25-year-old the opportunity to reunite with former coach Marco Rose.
