Newcastle United are set to rival Leicester City in the pursuit of Inter Milan’s out-of-favour midfielder Matias Vecino.
According to FC InterNews, Newcastle United have emerged as one of the latest clubs to have expressed interest in Matias Vecino. The Inter Milan midfielder has become an in-demand prospect in the transfer market after falling out of favour under the leadership of Simone Inzaghi this season.
Having started in just one game in Serie A this term, Vecino is frustrated with his lack of game-time at Inter. The midfielder has also lost sync with most of his teammates, even leading to a little spat between him and Ivan Perisic after the recent win over Torino.
It has led many to believe that the former Fiorentina ace could be on his way out of San Siro in January. The player has clearly struggled to offer anything noticeable since his return from injury, and his hefty salary is seemingly becoming a problem for Inter, especially in the middle of a financial crisis.
A few Italian clubs, including AS Roma, have already approached Vecino regarding a potential move in January. But it appears the midfielder is holding out for the same salary he currently earns at Inter, which could potentially rule most Italian clubs out of the race.
It could serve as a massive boost for the Premier League outfits, including Newcastle United. The Magpies are in the market for midfield reinforcements in January, as new coach Eddie Howe looks to boost the overall quality of his side and help the team stave off relegation during the second half of the campaign.
The Tyneside outfit have already been linked with a move for Tottenham outcast Dele Alli. But in Vecino, Howe might find himself a tested veteran who offers a wealth of experience, having featured in over 200 games in Serie A. The 30-year-old Uruguayan international also has 56 caps for his country, while his aggression and versatility could combine well with someone like Jonjo Shelvey.
However, Newcastle United are set to face stiff competition from Leicester City in the pursuit of Matias Vecino. The Inter Milan midfielder is also courted by a couple of Spanish teams in Villarreal and Sevilla – a destination favoured by the player himself. So, it remains to be seen if the Magpies are ready to step up their pursuit of the South American or decide to explore other possibilities in the winter window.
