West Ham United are interested in a move for Niklas Sule to shore up their backline as the Bayern Munich star runs down his deal in Germany.
According to Ex-WHU Employee, West Ham United are interested in bringing Germany international defender Niklas Sule in the January window. David Moyes wants to use the opportunity of his contractual situation to make a move next month to shore up his defensive options.
West Ham United have looked like a top team this season and have put up fine performances in games across the Premier League and Europa League. While they were sitting pretty in fourth place for quite a while, defensive injuries have threatened to derail their season and harm their chances of finishing in Champions League places.
In recent weeks, they have been slipping up, and the blame falls on their depleted numbers in central defence. Their starting centre-backs, Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma have suffered serious injuries during a key period of the season, leaving David Moyes to do with only Craig Dawson and Issa Diop in centre-back positions.
The January window offers the opportunity to rectify those issues at the back, as West Ham are expected to dip into the transfer market to sign a central defender.
The Hammers are now interested in Niklas Sule, who faces an uncertain future at Bayern Munich. His contract at the German giants ends at the end of the season, and with no extension agreed so far, there is a feeling he might move away next summer.
Some Premier League sides vying for his signature are prepared to make a cut-price move in January to shore up their defence. Sule has had an important role in Bayern’s season, making 15 Bundesliga appearances, and the club may block a move at this stage of the campaign.
However, if a reasonable offer comes in from one of the interested clubs, their stance might change. West Ham are prepared to move early next month to cover their thin defensive options.
The Hammers face intense competition from Chelsea and Real Madrid, who may prove to be a more attractive club than the London side. However, the promise of regular playing time might swerve Sule into considering an approach from Moyes’ side, who could only offer him Europa League football.
The defender was believed to be open to moving to England amid Newcastle United’s interest, although the Magpies have since switched their attention towards other targets. Even Arsenal had been mentioned among sides who are keeping a tab on his situation.
Sule might look to wait till the end of the campaign to evaluate his offers as a free agent rather than making a rushed move in January. He will certainly be a part of the Bayern Munich side that compete for the Bundesliga and remain one of the favourites to win the Champions League this term.
