Newcastle United are seeking the possibility of signing Manchester United trio Nemanja Matic, Donny van de Beek and Phil Jones in January.
A recent report from 90Min has offered an update on Newcastle United’s transfer policy. It appears they are prepared to narrow down their list of targets and are primarily hoping to sign a few proven Premier League stars, with a host of Manchester United players in their crosshairs.
The Magpies have indeed asked about the availability of at least five players in Anthony Martial, Nemanja Matic, Donny van de Beek, Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones.
Newcastle are aware that they may not get their hands on every single from this list, especially with Martial reportedly on the verge of a move to Sevilla, whereas Jesse Lingard is apparently keen on remaining at Old Trafford in an attempt to prove himself under the new manager. It has led to NUFC cooling their interest in the Englishman.
However, the door remains open for the remaining three players to leave Old Trafford in January. Matic, for one, is already facing an uncertain future at the club after the appointment of Ralf Rangnick.
The German usually prefers younger players that are more suited to his fast-paced and high-intensity football. The 33-year-old Serbian, to that end, might not be an ideal option to have, especially with Rangnick already eyeing a potential reunion with RB Leipzig ace Amadou Haidara.
A move to Newcastle United, therefore, could make sense as Matic can offer the experience the Magpies need in order to successfully charge a survival campaign during the second half of the campaign. The same goes for Phil Jones, who may enjoy some regular game-time after years of struggle at Manchester United.
The former English international has bizarrely emerged as a target for SL Benfica lately. But he could prefer remaining in England, with St. James’ Park being a potential destination.
Donny van de Beek is a more ambitious target for Newcastle. The Dutchman is the most sought-after player among the three, with even Barcelona and Real Madrid eyeing a move either in January or next summer. However, van de Beek may end up remaining at Old Trafford, knowing he has a realistic chance of finally making his United breakthrough under the leadership of Rangnick.
