Patrice Evra believes Paul Pogba could still have a future at Manchester United despite facing heavy criticism and running down his existing contract.
Paul Pogba began the season in explosive fashion by providing four assists for his teammates as Manchester United thrashed Leeds United at Old Trafford. After keeping that level of performance for a few more games, the Frenchman and the team started with their sloppy form to endure some terrible results.
A bad run of games, especially at home, saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lose his job at the helm. Since his arrival, new interim manager Ralf Rangnick has instilled some competitiveness and made them a viable competitor for a top-four place.
However, one of the club’s concerns is the future of their star man Paul Pogba. So far, the club and the player have failed to agree a new deal, casting doubts over his long-term future. There have been calls from some pundits for Manchester United to cash in on the Frenchman in January rather than lose him for free at the end of the season.
Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola has always been vocal regarding an exit from the club. Real Madrid have often been mentioned as a possible suitor, although the La Liga side has somewhat distanced themselves from a transfer in recent times.
During Pogba’s stay with the club so far, the most common criticisms have been directed towards his inconsistent performances for the team. There have been suggestions the midfielder performs at much higher levels for the French national side while putting in subdued displays at Manchester United.
This factor has irked former Manchester United star Patrice Evra, who believes Pogba could still have a future at Old Trafford. The Frenchman urged his compatriot to ‘fix’ the national side vs club debate. His quotes appeared on Tribal Football via Four Four Two, as he stated that the criticism from former stars may be a bit too much.
Evra said, “He’s such a great player – and maybe some people can’t understand why he can play so well with France for the national team and not as well for Manchester United. He needs to fix that, give more love to the fans, then they have to give more love to him in return. I think some of the old legends can sometimes go in too personal on him, which I don’t like. He’s a great guy.”
Pogba has been out injured since suffering a problem whilst on international duty with France. He is expected to return to full training in the new year and will be looked upon to help Manchester United clinch a top-four spot.
