Kevin Phillips thinks Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips will have a better impact at Liverpool than Jude Bellingham or others linked with the Reds.
It is no secret that Liverpool will sign a quality midfielder sooner rather than later, with some prominent names already doing the rounds in the media. Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield after being heavily tipped to make the grade at the club.
Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips is also linked with a move, although it is quite unclear what sort of a player Jurgen Klopp wishes to sign for the midfield department. There are many different styles available to the Liverpool manager in his current squad, and each midfielder has a distinct personality.
Bellingham or Phillips will certainly add another variety, thus giving Klopp a different dimension from the position. The German manager has always been keen on shifting and changing his midfield three in terms of stylistic aspects, although he might certainly look to replace departed star Georginio Wijnaldum.
There is also the possibility of bringing in an alternative to Jordan Henderson or Fabinho, both of whom have had niggling fitness issues in recent seasons. However, either Bellingham or Phillips will be an astute addition. Both will cost a lot of money, with the Dortmund teenager reportedly valued at over €100 million.
Former Sunderland star Kevin Phillips has suggested which England international Liverpool should sign, and he sides with the Leeds United star. Speaking to Football Insider, he urged the Reds to move for Phillips over Bellingham, stating he is better suited to Klopp’s style.
Phillips said, “I’ve said on record that Kalvin Phillips could play in any side in the world. He’s so good in that role in front of the defence. Breaking up play, hitting diagonal passes and running with the ball. He would naturally slot into that Liverpool side, I’m sure. If I am picking between Jude Bellingham, who’s been linked with Liverpool, and him, I would pick Phillips. He’s a bit older but I think he’s a top-class player.”
The Leeds United midfielder is currently out of action with an injury that will reportedly keep him out for nearly two months. Marcelo Bielsa welcomed some of his injured players back into the fold and unfortunately lost his influential midfielder. The absence of the England international will not deter Liverpool’s interest, as Klopp remains keen on the star for next season.
