Liverpool are reportedly considering meeting the €50 million release clause in the contract of Barcelona midfield prodigy Gavi.
According to a report from El Nacional, Liverpool are ready to step up their pursuit of Barcelona midfield sensation Gavi and are prepared to trigger the €50 million release clause in his contract.
A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia youth setup, the youngster has been on the club’s books since 2015, when he signed from Real Betis. Having made steady progression through the ranks, Gavi got his big breakthrough at the first-team level this season, despite his being just 17 years old, and the youngster has not looked back since.
Indeed, Gavi has quickly established himself as one of the regulars in the starting XI for Barcelona and has made 19 appearances across all competitions, registering one assist in the process. The 17-year-old also managed to break into the Spanish national team and has earned four caps already, impressing in the UEFA Nations League back in October.
Gavi’s progression with Barcelona has attracted the interest of several top clubs across Europe. Bayern Munich and Chelsea have shown a keenness towards the Spanish international, with Liverpool also now joining the hunt for his signing.
It is no secret that Liverpool are in need of freshening up their options in the middle of the park. James Milner is entering the final phase of his career, while Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are not getting any younger either. The Reds did not replace Georginio Wijnaldum following his departure in the summer transfer window, either.
In Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Tyler Morton, they have some promising young talent ready to form the core of the team in the years to come, and adding someone of Gavi’s talent and potential into the mix could be a good move on the part of Jurgen Klopp & co.
Gavi’s current contract runs till the summer of 2023 and has a release clause of €50 million. While Barcelona are hoping to extend his stay at the club and increase his exit clause, talks over a new deal could now hit a pause after their UEFA Champions League elimination as question marks are being raised over the project at the club.
Chelsea are one of the club’s aiming to take advantage of the situation, while Liverpool are also now plotting a swoop for Gavi, with the Reds willing to trigger the 17-year-old’s release clause without entering into any negotiations over a transfer fee. The midfielder is not the only Barcelona player that the Reds are targeting, with Sergino Dest also on their radars. Whether they sign either of the two remains to be seen.
