Transfer News: Sevilla considering loan move for Tottenham ace Bryan Gil

Tottenham starlet Bryan Gil has been linked with a shock return to Sevilla, as the Spanish giants eye offensive reinforcements in January.

According to a report from Fichajes, Sevilla are on the lookout for a new winger in the upcoming January transfer window. The Spanish giants have received a major blow recently, with new signing Erik Lamela being ruled out for at least four months due to a shoulder injury. It has prompted Monchi to look for potential reinforcements next month.

Monchi is looking at several options across Europe as he looks to find an ideal replacement for Lamela. But one player that has stood out among the rest is Bryan Gil of Tottenham Hotspur.

A native of Cadiz, Gil had spent nine years at Sevilla prior to his move to Spurs earlier in the summer. Although the winger had only made 21 competitive appearances for the club, he is regarded as one of the most talented young attackers in Spain. It was the reason why the Lilywhites had spent as much as €25 million for the player, in addition to offering Lamela in a swap deal.

However, Gil has endured a disappointing start to his career in England. He has featured in only 57 minutes of league football, falling behind the likes of Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and even Steven Bergwijn in the pecking order, although the latter has been linked with a January exit from Spurs.

The Spaniard’s fortunes are unlikely to change under new coach Antonio Conte. The former Inter Milan manager has not utilised the young winger in a single league game so far. His only appearance came against NS Mura in the UEFA Conference League, a game which Tottenham tragically lost.

Sevilla are hopeful that Tottenham will allow Gil to leave the club on a short-term loan deal in January. It is apparent that the player requires more game-time at the highest level of football, and a return to Spain, in that regard, could be beneficial. Moreover, Gil’s potential departure may open up the space in the Spurs squad, allowing the club to sanction a move for top January targets like Dejan Kulusevski.

Sevilla, though, aren’t the only suitor for the 20-year-old, who is also courted by FC Barcelona. Hence, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the young Spanish international, as he looks for a much-needed escape from English football.
