Barcelona are reportedly ready to part ways with midfield mainstay Frenkie de Jong as they believe they can make a profit from his departure.
According to a report from El Chiringuito TV, Barcelona are seriously considering the possibility of selling midfielder Frenkie de Jong as they look to rake in cash from the Dutchman’s exit.
De Jong has been with Barcelona since the summer of 2019, having arrived from AFC Ajax in a deal worth €86 million. The 24-year-old has been an ever-present in the side during his tenure at Camp Nou, going on to make 106 appearances in which he has produced a return of nine goals and 14 assists.
While de Jong has been a constant fixture in the starting XI for the Blaugrana, it would be fair to say that he has not always been at his best. Indeed, the Dutchman endured a slow start to life in Catalonia and had a rather average debut season before kicking on in the last campaign under Ronald Koeman.
However, his performances have been a bit up and down in the current season, while fans are also concerned over his displays in the big games. Furthermore, with the emergence of Pedri, Gavi and Nico Gonzalez has options in midfield, coupled with the departure of Koeman from the Barcelona hot seat, de Jong could now be staring at an uncertain future at Camp Nou.
Indeed, as per the report mentioned above, Barcelona are now considering the prospect of offloading the 36-time capped Netherlands international as they believe that they can make a profit from his exit.
The Catalans continue to be in a precarious position financially. But they need to make significant investments in the squad over the next couple of transfer windows if new manager Xavi Hernandez is to bring back the glory days at Camp Nou. So, there could be casualties from the current squad, and de Jong, one of Barca’s most sellable assets, could be cut from the roster.
As far as suitors for the Dutchman go, there is no shortage of interested parties with Manchester City and Bayern Munich believed to be keen on signing him while Paris Saint-Germain are also huge admirers of the 24-year-old.
It remains to be seen if Barcelona decide to go ahead with the sale of the former Ajax man or retain him and look to generate funds from the sales of other players from the squad.
