Aston Villa are reportedly keen on signing Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara after appointing Steven Gerrard as their new manager.
According to a report from the Daily Record, Aston Villa are set to renew their interest in Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara after they appointed ex-Gers boss Steven Gerrard as their new manager.
Having sacked Dean Smith from the managerial role earlier this month, the Villans acted quickly to name a replacement, raiding Scottish champions Rangers for Gerrard. The former Liverpool captain spent over three years at the Ibrox and did a fantastic job with the team, helping them end Celtic’s dominion in the Premiership last season.
With Gerrard now taking over the reins at Villa Park, there is a lot of positivity among the fans after a stuttering start to the campaign, despite the investments made in the summer. Now, the report mentioned above claims that the ex-Gers’ boss is already getting to work with transfer plans, as another raid on Ibrox could be in the works, this time for midfielder Kamara.
The 26-year-old is a former Arsenal youth academy prospect and signed for Rangers in January 2019 from Dundee FC. He developed into a linchpin in the middle of the park under the tutelage of Gerrard. Kamara, to date, has made 123 appearances for the Light Blues, bagging five goals and seven assists in the process.
It is believed that Aston Villa have been monitoring Kamara quite closely over the past couple of transfer windows. The Midlands club even came close to lodging a £6 million offer for the Finland international last summer as sporting director Johan Lange rates him very highly. A move, however, never materialised.
In the aftermath, Kamara, who had also been linked with Newcastle United in the summer, signed a new contract with Rangers, extending his stay until 2025. However, with Gerrard now at the helm of affairs at Villa Park, a renewed attempt to sign him could be launched to capture the 26-year-old ex-Arsenal trainee.
Villa have no shortage of options in the middle of the park, with Douglas Luiz, John McGinn, Marvelous Nakamba, Morgan Samson, Jacob Ramsey all available at Gerrard’s disposal. However, the team looks devoid of steel and determination in midfield when Luiz is unavailable, as has been the case due to his recent injury.
Furthermore, reports are claiming that Nakamba is a transfer target for Newcastle ahead of the January window. So, a move for someone like Kamara could work out well for the Villans. At 26, he is entering the peak years and is a player that knows Gerrard’s ways in and out, having developed a great deal under his guidance. What remains to be seen is if the pair end up reuniting in England in the near future.
