Frank McAvennie urged Manchester United to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, suggesting the Norwegian is not the man to lead the club.
The fallout from Manchester United’s defeat to Liverpool continues, as many are calling for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s head. The Norwegian manager has come under intense pressure since last evening’s defeat to the Merseysiders, and the baffling thing was the manner of the loss.
Gary Neville was the first of many to tear into the players and Solskjaer after the loss, claiming they never looked to win the contest. Solskjaer looked completely distraught yesterday during half-time with boos ringing around Old Trafford as his side trailed 4-0.
Solskjaer’s managerial ability has been constantly questioned ever since he took charge after Jose Mourinho was sacked in December 2018. Despite spending millions on high profile transfers, the Norwegian is yet to win a single trophy. Last season’s distant second-place finish and reaching the Europa League Final have been his best achievements in the dugout.
Recent results haven’t gone his way either. Starting with the loss and draw at home to Aston Villa and Everton respectively, there was a pattern about the team emerging from the wilderness. If the defeat to Leicester City was any indication of shortcomings, the thrashing at the hands of Liverpool ensured Solskjaer’s reign hit rock bottom, with people already calling for his head.
Frank McAvennie thinks it may be time for Manchester United to sack Solskjaer at the earliest and take another approach. Despite the manager insisting the team can bounce back, McAvennie told Football Insider the Norwegian probably isn’t the man to take the club forward.
McAvennie said, “I said this last year. I said Ole is not the man to take Manchester United forward. I was hoping I was going to be wrong. He’s a lovely guy and he was a wonderful player, I don’t want him to fail. That was just my opinion. Put him on the staff, have him at the club, I understand that. But manager?
“He was always interim for me. It always feels like we are waiting for a better manager to come along. He hasn’t got the tactical nous, not for me. I like the guy, I really respect him. But if he doesn’t go, we will still be talking about this next year. He’s been so lucky. Man United have to make that change. It’s time. It’s an easy decision.”
