Leeds United, Newcastle United and other Premier League sides are set to miss out on Blackburn midfielder Joe Rothwell, who could join Rangers.
According to TEAMtalk, several Premier League clubs, including Leeds and Newcastle United, could miss out on midfield target Joe Rothwell. The 26-year-old Blackburn star could be lured into signing for Scottish champions Rangers, with Steven Gerrard keen on bringing the Championship player.
Joe Rothwell has managed to line up plenty of interest from clubs outside of the Championship. Teams from the Premier League have been showing interest in acquiring the 26-year-old from Blackburn after it was clear he does not wish to extend his contract at Ewood Park.
Marcelo Bielsa had reportedly earmarked the player to improve his midfield option, while the new ownership of Newcastle United also remained keen. Other sides have made enquiries for Rothwell; the midfielder might have already decided on his next destination.
Steven Gerrard’s side have reportedly contacted the player and his representatives, which has led to suggestions that Rothwell’s next destination could be Scotland. Rangers would like to strengthen their midfield and are interested in the Championship star.
Rothwell is primarily a midfielder who prefers to attack. His stats prove his worthwhile contribution from a central area; as for Blackburn, he continues to be an option with goals and assists to his name. Gerrard requires such an option as he’s found it difficult to get a goalscorer or creator from midfield areas.
As things stand, Rothwell has decided not to renew his deal at Blackburn, which expires at the end of the season. Premier League clubs would have liked to sign him on a cut-price move in the winter window as they do not have the privilege of signing a pre-contract agreement with the player.
However, Rangers have the option, and they are likely to enter into a pre-contract agreement with Rothwell, then sign the 26-year-old on a free transfer at the end of the season.
While Leeds and Newcastle were very keen on the midfielder, they are set for disappointment in this particular pursuit. Rothwell could be a good signing for Rangers and could develop further under the stewardship of Steven Gerrard, who has done brilliantly at the club so far.
