Frank McAvennie thinks Manchester United will spend considerably in the January window to keep pace for a top four finish.
At the start of the season, Manchester United were spoken in the same breath as Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea for being title contenders. However, after tailing off rivals due to bad form, they are now tipped to finish the term scrambling for a top four place.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was heavily criticised after Manchester United failed to win at Old Trafford in consecutive Premier League games, with the last one a disappointing draw to Everton. The team is certainly off the pace, and if their current form continues, they might find themselves in a more difficult position.
Manchester United were expected to challenge for the title from the off, having made some impressive signings. During the summer transfer window, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo arrived as the club made a huge outlay in the market. Apart from the Portuguese, the rest are yet to set themselves up properly at the club, costing them points in the present.
Former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie believes Manchester United might look for solutions in the transfer market in January to solve their existing problems. He claims they might dip in to find players who could help them mount a challenge for a top-four place this season, as he spoke to Football Insider.
McAvennie said, “I think Man United will go big again in January. They aren’t going to be in the top four unless they really sort themselves out soon. They need a regular starting lineup, and they need to start Ronaldo. Even if a new manager comes in, they will want to make a signing or two.”
“Even if Ole stays, he has to challenge for the title this season; maybe they could do with another midfielder. They need to stop shipping goals, but how can you improve that defence? There are some very strong teams out there. Chelsea and Man City are doing as well as we all expected. Liverpool are also looking good, so are Everton. I think they will make a signing or two in January.”
There are a few players linked already with the club, but no concrete links have emerged yet. We willl have to wait for the January window to arrive to determine if Manchester United can make any significant outlay on new players or if Solskjaer fin -tunes his current options to turn them into challengers.
