Tottenham tipped to sign Anthony Martial

Noel Whelan believes Anthony Martial could reignite his career by moving to Tottenham after reports emerge of the north London side’s interest.

Things have not been glossy for Anthony Martial at Manchester United after an underwhelming 2020/21 season. The France international has begun the new campaign on a dull note as well, as speculation around his future continues to grow. Additionally, after the club signed star attacking names, the Frenchman’s game time has been hit badly.

There were plenty of rumours linking Martial with a move away from Old Trafford during the summer. However, owing to his recent injury and Manchester United’s £40 million asking price, interested clubs might have baulked over making a move.

The forward was recently linked with Borussia Dortmund as they seek a replacement for Erling Haaland next summer. And latest reports are suggesting a move to Tottenham could be on the cards, with midfield misfit Tanguy Ndombele going the other way.

Surely Martial will find it hard to get any meaningful game time at Old Trafford after the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and the form of Mason Greenwood. He is also re-considered by Didier Deschamps for a France role, and he will have to find a solution to play regularly.

Noel Whelan has tipped Martial to make a move to Spurs and believes it could reignite his career in a big way. Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan compared a potential Spurs move for Martial to Jesse Lingard’s spell at West Ham United last January.

Whelan said, “Look at Lingard going to West Ham last year. That’s an example of how these sorts of signings can work. He’s still young enough, but he’s a player who desperately needs a fresh start.

“Just like Lingard, he needs to get away from Man United to reignite his career and show people what he’s all about regularly. Sometimes you need that new lease of life, and at the moment, there’s no benefit to him staying at Manchester United. If United are to offload him, he could very well be the replacement that Spurs want if Harry Kane moves on.”

A move to Tottenham certainly makes sense from Martial’s perspective. Spurs might be struggling at times, but they need a serious injection in forward areas, and the Frenchman could prove to be a useful addition.
