Aston Billa are keen to make a move for Liverpool youngster Curtis Jones but the 20-year-old has little reason to leave Merseyside.
According to The Sun, Premier League side, Aston Villa are ready to make their move to land talented Liverpool youngster Curtis Jones.
The Villians have enjoyed a busy summer so far, bringing in a host of quality players. Axel Tuanzebe rejoined the club on loan from Manchester United while the likes of Danny Ings and Emi Buendia will add some much-needed firepower to the starting XI. Ashley Young, meanwhile, oozes experience and leadership, not to mention depth.
With just days left for the summer transfer window to close, Dean Smith’s side are ready to make one more throw of the dice. Their target is 20-year-old Jones, a talented player who is yet to establish himself as a regular at Liverpool.
Having come through the Reds Academy, the local lad has been with the club since 2010. He progressed through the ranks, eventually making his first-team debut on 7 January 2019 in the FA Cup against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 20-year-old has so far made 47 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring seven goals and assisting six more. Predominantly a central midfielder, Jones can fulfil several roles all across the pitch. His versatility offers him an advantage when it comes to adapting to different systems.
While neither the youngster nor Liverpool have shown any inclination of parting ways, Villa are set to test the waters with a bid of around £15million.
The Reds have already lost Georiginio Wijnaldum this summer and are yet to bring in any midfield reinforcements. Losing Jones too at this point is unlikely to benefit them in any way. The youngster is also a homegrown player, a criterion that the Reds require right now.
Despite him not featuring regularly of late, there is little to suggest he has no future at Anfield. Jones captained the youngest side in Liverpool history when he skippered a side with an average age of 19 years and 102 days to a 1–0 victory over Shrewsbury in the FA Cup replay at Anfield in 2019.
Jurgen Klopp’s handling of Harvey Elliott shows he is not opposed to trusting youth. With Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain proving as brittle as glass in recent seasons, Jones could get enough opportunities to prove his worth and further his career.
Jordan Henderson is not getting any younger, and the Reds will need to replace him sooner or later. With James Milner already on his last legs, Jones is primed to play a big role in the years to come. Klopp will need to rebuild what is an ageing Liverpool side in the coming years.
The 20-year-old, to that end, could very well realize he is better off staying at Anfield for the foreseeable future. He has the potential to emerge as one of the leaders of a new-look Reds side.
Aston Villa have no shortage of alternatives, though, having reportedly launched a pursuit to sign Axel Witsel of Borussia Dortmund.
