Manchester United are reportedly the frontrunners to secure the signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of next year.
According to a report from German publication BILD, Manchester United are currently in pole position to snap up the transfer of Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland in the summer window of 2022.
Haaland has taken the footballing scenes by storm since making the switch to Borussia Dortmund from RB Leipzig in the January window last year. Since joining the Black and Yellows, the 21-year-old Norwegian international has plundered 62 goals in 63 matches, leading to interest from each and every top club across Europe.
While Dortmund were able to hold on to him this summer by slapping a massive price tag, the case may not be the same next year, when his release clause, which stands at €75 million, will kick in. And, the report states that it is unlikely that the Germans would be able to retain Haaland’s services in 2022 even if they go on to win trophies in the ongoing season.
BILD claims that Haaland’s representative, the controversial Mino Raiola, will get a club to pay out his release clause and secure an exit, while adding that Manchester United are the frontrunners to do so, at the moment, although not much clarity has been offered on why that is.
Manchester United are no strangers to Haaland, having unsuccessfully pursued him last year before he signed for Dortmund. The Red Devils’ manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows the 21-year-old well, having coached him during his formative years at Molde.
Manchester United will be in need of a new centre-forward when the next season rolls in considering that Edinson Cavani is in the final year of his contract, while Anthony Martial could potentially be shown the doors as well in case he fails to come good in the ongoing campaign.
The 20-time English champions have lacked a prolific No. 9 for a while now, having decided not to replace Romelu Lukaku after selling him to Inter Milan in 2019. So, it is very much likely that they will go big the next summer for a new centre-forward. And, having swooped Jadon Sancho away from Dortmund this year, they could raid the Signal Iduna Park for Haaland twelve months later.
There have been reports that Haaland already has a pre-agreement with Real Madrid over a transfer to the Spanish capital club next summer. Only time will tell as to where the 21-year-old ends up. For now, he will be staying at Dortmund and hoping to enhance his reputation further with another prolific campaign.
