Official: Leeds United sign Kristoffer Klaesson

Leeds United have completed their sixth signing of the summer transfer window with goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson joining from Valerenga.

As confirmed on the club’s official website, Leeds United have secured the signing of 20-year-old Norwegian goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson from Valerenga.

A product of the Valerenga youth setup, Klaesson made his first-team debut for the Elitserien outfit in 2019 and had since gone on to establish himself as the first-choice shot-stopper for the Norwegian club. The 20-year-old went on to make 56 appearances, of which 15 came in the ongoing campaign in Norway.

Klaesson has also represented the Norwegian national team across various age-group levels but is yet to make his debut for the senior side. Talks over a move to Leeds United had been going on for a while now with the Whites director, Victor Orta, flying down to Norway earlier this month to hash out a deal. And the Yorkshire-based outfit have been successful in their pursuit of the 20-year-old.

An official statement released by the club confirming the transfer read: “Leeds United are pleased to announce the signing of goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson. The 20-year-old joins the Whites from Norwegian side Vålerenga for an undisclosed fee. Following a successful medical, the goalkeeper has penned a four-year deal at Elland Road, running until the summer of 2025.”

The Athletic’s Phil Hay reports that Leeds United will be paying a transfer fee just in excess of £1 million for Klaesson, who has signed a four-year contract with the Elland Road outfit, running till the summer of 2025.

It was a necessary addition for Leeds United after they saw Kiko Casilla leave the club to join Spanish outfit Elche on loan. His departure left first-choice custodian Illan Meslier without any proper competition for the No. 1 slot, with Klaesson now coming in to provide just that.

The 20-year-old Norwegian Under-21 international becomes Leeds United’s sixth signing of the ongoing summer transfer window. The Whites have already confirmed five arrivals in the form of Junior Firpo, Jack Harrison, Lewis Bate, Amari Miller and Sean McGurk, although the latter three are expected to be a part of the club’s Under-23 outfit for the upcoming campaign.
