Transfer News: Tottenham in talks with Jannik Vestergaard

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly held talks with Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard over a potential switch in the ongoing transfer window.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks to try and sign Danish international defender Jannik Vestergaard as he enters the final year of his contract with Premier League rivals Southampton.

Vestergaard spent the majority of his professional career in Germany playing for TSG Hoffenheim, Werder Bremen and Borussia Monchengladbach before making his way to the Premier League in 2018, signing for Southampton. While he didn’t instantly become a regular at St. Mary’s, the 28-year-old has gradually grown into a key player for the Saints, racking up 79 appearances to date, scoring four goals as well.

However, Vestergaard has entered the final year of his contract with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side alerting Tottenham of his potential availability at a bargain price this summer. The Lilywhites are embarking on a fresh journey under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who was brought in to replace compatriot Jose Mourinho, 72 days after he was axed.

And, it seems like Nuno, along with newly-appointed sporting director Fabio Paratici, are eyeing defence as a major area of concern. Indeed, veteran defender Toby Alderweireld has asked to leave the club this summer while Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez can hardly be termed as reliable and consistent. With Joe Rodon still settling in and lacking the Premier League experience, a new centre-back or two makes a lot of sense for Spurs.

To that end, Tottenham have been heavily linked with a move for Nuno’s former protege and Wolves’ captain Conor Coady while Olympique Lyon’s Joachim Andersen, who spent the 2020/21 season on loan in the Premier League with Fulham, has also emerged as a key transfer target. Now, it seems like Vestergaard has also registered as a potential candidate to bolster the Spurs’ defence for the upcoming campaign.

The 28-year-old has been impressing with the Danish national team at the UEFA Euro 2020. Add to it his Premier League experience and contract status, Vestergaard does present himself as an attractive target for Tottenham considering the current financial climate. To that end, the north London giants have now held talks with the towering defender over a summer move, the report claims.

Whether it leads to a transfer remains to be seen. If a move does not materialise, Tottenham seem to have contingencies in place, with Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu, who can play at right-back and centre-back, a target as well, along with Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic, who is also in the final year of his contract with the Serie A outfit.
