Liverpool have reportedly completed the signing of teenage prodigy Kaide Gordon from EFL Championship outfit Derby County.
According to a report from Goal.com, Premier League champions Liverpool have signed 16-year-old wonderkid Kaide Gordon from second division outfit Derby County.
Gordon joined the Derby County youth academy at the age of six and has risen through the youth ranks quite rapidly. The young attacking midfielder has been part of the Rams’ Under-18 setup over the past couple of seasons and had been named the club’s Academy Player of the Season for the 2019/20 campaign.
Having made a distinct impression, Gordon was called up to the senior team by manager Wayne Rooney, who went on to hand the youngster his first-team debut last December. In the process, the 16-year-old became the fourth-youngest player ever to represent the Rams’ at the senior level.
Rooney had lavished plenty of praise on Gordon while admitting that when a club of Liverpool’s stature comes calling, it was always likely that the teenage prodigy would be on the move. “Kaide is a fantastic player. I brought him into the squad because he was showing the qualities I want,” Rooney said.
“There has been an offer for Kaide [from Derby] since before I have been in this role. He hasn’t signed it for whatever reason. Liverpool have become aware of that and stepped in. Once a team like Liverpool comes in for one of your players it is hard to turn that down.”
And now, Gordon has gone on to sign for the Merseyside giants, with Derby County confirming that the two clubs had reached an “undisclosed compensation agreement” for the England youth international.
Confirming the transfer, the 16-year-old took to social media to express his gratitude to the Rams, while also insisting that he couldn’t wait to start his journey at Liverpool. It is expected that the teenager will link up with the Reds’ Under-23s and is unlikely to play any part for Jurgen Klopp’s first-team immediately.
Gordon’s potential availability had attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham as well. However, Liverpool have beaten their rivals to his signing, adding another promising young starlet to their youth ranks.
